Below is a copy of my first refection at my final major practical, an experience which occurred over 8 weeks in term 3.
So many things I could write about. Mostly I learnt more today about how to conduct, log & use assessment, learnt about early clarification of rules for group work, and that we need to be mindful that what we say to children can be repeated to parents. But so many other things.
Re assessment I have started a log for my lessons, a basic yes, no or partially individual children 'got it'. In addition to this I will start collecting important anecdotal records of children as I come across them.
I will also need diagnostic and end of year detailed assessments, and detailed assessment profiles for all students, divided by subject, for reporting and profiling. Also for informing my teaching.
I am learning more about group work, specifically I experimented today a bit with how to make large 6 child brainstorming groups work. I realise that however I group, I must deliver clear explicit rules for the lesson before commencing activities. I really like cooperative learning and will try more strategies.
I need to take care with delicate subjects with children, not that I said something poor but I appreciate that giving my views needs to be carefully framed (for example I don't believe in smacking children, but some children could be disciplined this way by parents).
A great days teaching, need to keep trying things out and persevering.
